Zahira is a young woman from a Pakistani family in Belgium, leading a crazy but “normal” life, like that of her non-Pakistani friends. But with an unexpected pregnancy, Zahira turns to her best friend Aurore and her trusted elder brother Amir to help her figure out what to do. Though her family seems initially supportive, and clearly love her, they have their own ideas of her future. Like her elder sister before her, Zahira is expected to marry a Pakistani man of her parents’ choosing. They present her with photos of three distant cousins, assuring her that she has more choice than they did: she’ll even have the luxury of chatting with her prospects over Skype. Torn between the desire to chart her life’s path and the need to honor her family’s cultural traditions, Zahira must decide what she’s willing to sacrifice and which world she’ll call home. Strikingly shot and deeply felt, Noces is an unforgettable drama.
