Although they are very different movies in so many ways, even as Slumdog Millionaire was bringing the world of Bollywood and contemporary India to world screens and to the Oscars, Ghajini was becoming the highest grossing blockbuster in the history of Indian Cinema. (Perhaps not entirely uncoincidentally, both films share a musical score by newly minted Oscar winner A.R. Rahman.) Ghajini improbably mixes the kind of romantic comedy and extravagant musical numbers that the Bollywood cinema is known for with the intensity and hyped up charge of a Hollywood thriller, set in motion by a plot that’s been compared to Memento. Unbelievably buff, incredibly tattooed and absolutely lost, Sachin has a memory that lasts literally 15 minutes. He writes post-it notes to himself to remember what bus to take—and what the mission of his life is: to kill Ghajini—whoever HE is..... But Sachin’s intense and mysterious story is crossed with a charming and silly romance between a suave billionaire and a perky aspiring model. What do these stories have to do with each other? It will take most of Ghajini’s 3 hours to fully answer that question.
