As an example of Do It Yourself on-the-cheap filmmaking, it’s tough to beat the new film from Georg Koszulinski, the director of Immokalee U.S.A. (from last year’s MIFF) and The Road to Katahdin (from this year’s). Scored to a terrific soundtrack by Indie band Desperanto, Dead Buffalo examines American culture through the eyes of Charlie Johnson, terminally ill but embarking on a road trip from the American south to the Great Plains of the West, reluctantly accompanied by his son, Dusty. A road movie with a real ending, Dead Buffalo is a testament to native American resiliency—in both our culture and as embodied in the very process of filmmaking.
