![]() Germany 2008 35 mm 98 Minutes In German with English subtitles Director: Andreas Dresen Producer: Peter Rommel Screenplay: Andreas Dresen, Jorg Hauschild Principal Cast: Ursula Werner, Horst Rehberg, Horst Westphal Print Courtesy: Music Box Films Cloud 9 is the groundbreaking and lyrical story of a 67-year old married woman who rediscovers passion and her sexuality when she falls in love with a 76-year old man. It opens with an explicit (yet not exploitive) lovemaking scene, surprising the viewer as perhaps its characters. Inge, an East Berlin seamstress, lives, happily enough, with her husband Werner, whose obsession is steam engines. But when delivering a pair of pants to the single Karl, she falls into his arms, despite never intending to. She is quite matter-of-fact about this with her horrified husband, and cannot understand the fuss. Yet in this most unusual film, these winning characters’ lives certainly have changed. Cloud 9, from leading young German director Andres Dresen, whose Grill Point screened at MIFF, won an Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and the Best Director and Best Actress prizes at this year’s German Film Awards. |
