In Arabic and French Director, screenplay: Mahamat-Saleh Haroun Producers: Sebastian Deliouye, Diana Elbaum, Simon Field, Keith Griffiths, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Abderramane Sissako Principal Cast: Ali Barkai, Youssouf Djaoro, Djibri Ibrahim, Aziza Hissaine Print courtesy of Art Mattan Films Chad, 2006. After a forty-year civil war, the radio announces the government has just amnestied the war criminals. Outraged by the news, Gumar Abatcha orders his grandson Atim, a sixteen-year-old youth, to take his father's own gun and find Nassara, the man who made him an orphan, and to execute him. Atim obeys his grandfather and traces his family's old enemy only to find that Nassara is not the monster Atim imagined but a bread baker, with a wife, who goes to the mosque, and feeds the hungry. A beautifully filmed, poetic grappling with difficult questions: How do we create peace for ourselves in a world at war? Is redemption possible for any of us? When can we offer or receive forgiveness? What is real justice? Winner of the UNESCO Award, and Amnesty International Award, as well as the Best Cinematography Award from Ouagadougou Panafrican Film Festival. |
