The 20th annual Maine International Film Festival is bringing the Maine to MIFF right out of the gate by presenting The Sounding, a film shot on location on Monhegan Island, as its Opening Night film. The Sounding will feature a post-screening Q&A from the director, co-writer and star of the film, Catherine Eaton, and will be screened at 7:00pm on Friday, July 14th at the Waterville Opera House in downtown Waterville. Following the screening will be the Opening Night Party in Castonguay Square featuring the musical stylings of Muddy Ruckus, outdoor projections by LumenARRT!, and food and libations from Silver Street Tavern.
The Sounding (www.thesoundingfilm.com) introduces us to Liv, a young woman raised on a remote island by her grandfather Lionel; Liv has never spoken. When Lionel discovers he’s dying, he calls the son of his best friend and a former protégé, Michael, to the island and asks him to protect Liv’s independence. That night, as Lionel is reading to Liv, his voice fails him. Liv picks up the book of Shakespeare and begins: first reading, then weaving a language from Shakespeare’s words. Michael discovers her speaking and commits her to a psychiatric hospital. Incensed, Lionel’s attorney blocks Michael from treating Liv. She is committed to a psychiatric hospital, where she becomes a full-blown rebel; her increasing violence threatens to keep her locked up for life.
“The Sounding speaks to all of us as it tells its haunting story of a woman who chooses to speak only in her own way,” says MIFF Programming Director Ken Eisen, describing the film as one “that resonates with Maine, with life, and with the beat of a different drum.”
“The cast and crew of The Sounding braved the cold and the sea as we shot on the remote island of Monhegan, twelve miles out to sea off the coast of Maine,” says Eaton. “The island and the islanders gave incredible support and the sheer raw beauty necessary to lend Liv’s world its own narrative voice. The use of Monhegan Island as well as other authentic locations is intended to give a level of honesty to The Sounding that reflects Liv’s own.”
